This decade has sucked. Just think, we survived the 1970s, they sucked, and in less than three weeks, we will have survived the Zeros, a zero of a decade.
It sure started well. dumb'ya got appointed to the presidency because the SCOTUS dithered for a while, then decided they didn't have time to think about what to do about the mess in Florida. It was a fitting start to the decade of screwing everything up.
Then there was 9/11 and our botched response. Let OBL off the hook and invade Iraq. Oops. Guess the GPS coordinates were a little off. What was the reason we were going in? It depended on who you asked and when you asked. Those guys couldn't keep any answer for more than 15 minutes.
The rest of our foreign policy made about as much sense.
Domestically, we had growth, but it was hollow growth in the economy. It was built on fraud. Bernie Maddoff was the perfect mascot for finance in the Zeros. Nobody got anywhere except the puppeteer at the top, who just managed to screw everybody without doing anything useful. It collapsed, taking the rest of us down, down from where we already were at the bottom. How does this work? It doesn't, except in the Zeros.
Our national aspirations have gone into the toilet. We put a man on the moon, we built an interstate highway system, and now we whine about taxes and how big the government is. We got tax cuts during a war, and the war was all off budget, paid for by "supplementals." The administration couldn't figure out what anything would cost, even after years of practice. We are spinning all kinds of misinformation about healthcare, and the guy who ranted about getting the government out of my Medicare is the perfect example of how badly we have lost our way. We really have become that stupid.
No Child Left Behind has created a whole lot of bureaucracy, but it hasn't created any new rocket scientists. We have to import those from China and India. Except now they are staying in China and India, since our Maddoffs at the top can make more money by hiring them over there.
In the Zeros, working people who might have benefited from union membership have become even more anti-union. It is the same mentality as thinking the government has nothing to do with Medicare. It's the same mentality which lets a confirmed idiot like Sarah Palin achieve any kind of status other than dog catcher.
People who achieved rank were responsible for all kinds of problems, but were never held accountable. It's the Zero thing. The rest of us paid the price.
It will probably take a bit of the Tens to clear out the lingering cobwebs of the Zeros. But, since the Tens start in less than three weeks, we can spend the rest of December purging ourselves of the Zeros and preparing for better days.
