That's truly the most epic last lap EVAR! I believe that's where the apocryphal "See God, then back off" Schwantz quote came from. Apparently Rainey hit the brakes sooner than Schwantz expected, and, well, the rest is etched in history. I've got that whole season on VHS, along with 1984 through 1996 compilations. Just need to find a cheap, quick way to put them all on DVD, so I can keep watching them.

The machines truly looked barely in control and the riders were godlike in their abilities. I tend to think only about 3 riders in today's GP would be able to ride any of those. Rossi has Stoner, because his machine is currently out of control and Spies, because I'm a fanboy.

Spies might be both crazy and talented enough. Rossi for sure because he proved it. Stoner would kill himself.
Schwantz' bike looked like it was completely out of control even going straight.

That wiggling around would cause soiled shorts, for me at least.

I dislike Stoner's personality. I think he's a petulant child at times, but he would be fun to watch on a 500. It would be outta control. Rossi would just win.

Pretty much, but I'm also a fanboy, so I think Spies is going to give him a handful. Until Rossi figures out how to get into his head. You know he will somehow.

Every time I watch this video, I am amazed at how these guys rode those bikes.
The tires move around constantly. I saw at LEAST 6 major front end slides in that video (both riders) the chassis obviously protested inputs (look at Schwantz crossed up out of the chicane and the bob and weave he was getting on the straights).
You don't see any of that out of GP these days.

Wonder if it works on "protected" tapes... Research will be taking place!

What do you think the #17 back marker thought when he got passed simultaneously on both sides?
I got a laugh out of it.
