Although i applaud the sentiment, i think this seals his fate as a one termer. If anything would ensure the most viciously fought election possible from the Rs, this has to be it. The timing sux. This will do nothing but damage the movement; the public just isn't there yet. maybe in 5 or ten years..but certainly not now. This was a massive mistake. The only out is if the R's go *completely* berzerk to the point that the public actually realizes universal offense. But i just forsee intensified polarization. It's all too bad, really.

I expect the GOP to go completely berzerk. The timing is early in the election cycle and a whole lot will happen between now and November. Obama knows this. Look at how much Romney has done and said that should have gotten him ejected from the human race, but it hasn't stuck. This won't stick either. What it will do is piss off people who never would have voted for Obama and might motivate people who are more likely to. You know Romney and the rest of the GOP will be foaming at the mouth over this and will make it a huge issue. Chances are it will spill over onto the immigration reform discussion as well, with the result that the GOP will further alienate a growing demographic. I don't know whether it was a good or bad idea, but it was a ballsy move and the timing is better now than in October. It would have been even better if Obama had done this a year ago, but so it goes.
