So it's been coming up. I actually just had a slightly heated argument with a friend of mine. He visited Afghanistan in 2005 to see an old friend of both of ours. This other friend is trying to make a go over there and just got a contract to help the US Military build facilities at their base in Kandahar.
He thinks we (the US) needs to stay long term, but he also wants to go over there and work with our other friend. He is a progressive by the way.

There have been times when I'm quite indecisive with both iraq and afghanistan. It's not due to lack of research, I'm aware of the major counts and counter-points.
Overall, I say we GTFO, I suppose.

Let's finish the original job. Thats the problem,up until recently there wasn't really an "original job", and even now I'm not sure there is. Sure there were a couple of things on the "to do list", like capture/kill bin laden, kill al-qaeda, and sight in and test our bombs for Iraq, but I haven't read or seen anything regarding a long term plan until recently. The same happened in Iraq, we went in there guns-a-blazin and had no idea WTF to do afterwords. Luckily, the people for the most part want to go on with their lives and get back to the way things were before we went in, minus a ruthless dictator. All Afghanistan has known in recent history is warfare. Those people are as used to war as we are going to walmart. Unless we provide some sense of normalcy and infrastructure (ie something better than what they have), it doesn't matter how many Taliban or al-qaeda we kill, as soon as we leave (we will sooner or later) it will be right back to the same old game. I have watched the frontline episodes and some others and they detail pretty well whats going on. We clear out a section of insurgents.. leave, and they come right back. The people have no will or resolve to stop them, and in most cases help us, so its a never ending game of cat and mouse. Sure more troops would help, but short of having 10 soldiers for every square mile of country that isn't going to work alone.
